There’s good news about Dayton area high schools and the local talent pool for Dayton, OH manufacturing.
Local high schools prepare students through project-based learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), through traditional as well as technical education, and show high academic achievement despite economic adversity. Let’s look at three examples.
The Dayton Regional STEM School is part of Wright State University. The school draws students from eight counties and offers project-based learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at the high school level.
The school describes how students:
…create digital online portfolios featuring projects that illustrate growth in…five important 21st Century skills: persistence, inquiry, communication, creativity, and collaboration.
Students get a head start on professional involvement by presenting these portfolios to the community and interacting with local businesses through school partnerships.
Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City, OH is a traditional high school with lots of school spirit and a wide range of opportunities for all students, including sports, advanced placement coursework, music, theater, and special interest clubs.
One asset at Tippecanoe is the high school’s relationship with the Miami Valley Career Technology Center. The Center offers almost 50 vocational programs and technology courses to students at Tippecanoe.
Another asset is the Tippecanoe STEAM Boosters, Inc., a parent-led group that promotes interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. The group mentors students interested in STEAM and does fundraising for programs, materials, and equipment to support the school.
Tippecanoe High School is on both US News & World Report’s list of Best High Schools and Newsweek’s list of America’s Top High Schools. Thirty-three out of Newsweek’s top 500 schools are in Ohio.
Newsweek also identifies 500 more high schools that are “Beating the Odds.” These schools have high academic achievement despite high poverty. This “Beating the Odds” list includes another 40 high schools in Ohio.
One of them is Arcanum High School, in Arcanum, OH.
Arcanum High School’s graduation rate is an amazing 100%, despite 99% poverty. These statistics show a rare dedication to success for the school and its students. Since more of its graduates are college-ready than college-bound, Arcanum graduates might be available to learn about manufacturing jobs in the local area.
These three Dayton area high schools demonstrate that good things are happening to prepare talent for the future of local manufacturing. As always, the challenge remains making employment opportunities known to the students who might be interested.
