Where do these standards come from, and what do they mean for your product?
International Standards – ISO
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) began in 1947 in Switzerland. It currently has 162 members, with each member representing a single country. The ISO is an independent non-governmental organization, and the acronym ISO is the same in every language. The quality management system at Proto Plastics meets or exceeds the standards specified in ISO 9001:2015.
National Standards – ANSI
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the United States of America’s representative member in the ISO. ANSI began in 1916, when five national organizations joined forces to coordinate standards across various industries.
National Mechanical Engineering Standards – ASME
One of those five organizations was the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), founded in 1880. Within its first few years, it began to establish standards for American mechanical engineering. ASME determines the standards for engineering drafting and the specialized language of communicating specific design requirements. Since its inception, ASME has steadily updated standards to reflect changing technology and meet modern needs.

ANSI/ASME Y14.5 GD&T
Another term to know is GD&T, which means geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Engineers work with clients to establish the ideal geometric dimensions for their products, and engineers also complete tolerancing, which is analysis and specification of tolerable deviations from the geometric dimensions.
